Tell us your love story!
Vanessa was my brother’s friend during school. I knew of her but didn’t meet her until years later. After running into each other throughout our 20s and trying to set up hang outs via social media (only to realize we lived cities apart at the same time). Finally, we found ourselves living in the same city (at the same time) and ran into each other at a bar. We’ve been together ever since!
What about the proposal?
For my birthday, Vanessa treated us to a day at the spa. It was raining outside and was a perfect day for a relaxing couples massage. After the massage I noticed an envelope propped up on the counter next to me. Vanessa caught me looking at it and said, “It’s just a little surprise for you.” I opened the envelope to find a note card that simply read, "I'm lovin’ you, want to be my wife?" I then realized the envelope was propped up by a small box; in it was my gorgeous ring. I had no idea Vanessa had been planning this for months. Her proposal was a total surprise. It was one of the sweetest moments.
When did you know that you were meant to be with each other?
I feel like we knew pretty early on that we were meant to be with each other. Everything just fell into place the moment we started dating.
Going into the wedding planning, what did you definitely know?
We had different ideas about the venue starting out. I wanted outdoor, Vanessa wanted indoor. So we compromised, outdoor ceremony and indoor reception. We knew our color scheme right away and what things we wanted to keep traditional and what we wanted to make our own.
What surprised you during planning? What was easy, what was difficult?
Finding a venue with the outdoor/indoor options we had agreed on became so stressful! We ended up finding our beautiful venue through social media and fell in love with it! I ended up loving the idea of everything being indoors! A difficult aspect of the planning was nailing down the various specifics. We were both surprised about how many details would have to be ironed out— how many out-of-towners for the room block, how many of them would need singles or doubles, how many vegetarians, how many slices of cake etc. So many things we never realized we had to figure out!
Is there anything you wish you knew while you were planning your wedding that you know now?
It was all a learning experience. I wish we knew that things would work out no matter what and to not worry so much about the minor touches. Vanessa wished she knew how fast the day would go – she would have planned the ceremony for very early in the afternoon and had all day to celebrate.
Any advice for couples planning weddings now? Anything you would have done differently or anything you’d like to add?
Communicate with each other and be prepared to make compromises. Remember it’s about the two of you! It’s a lot of work and stress, but it’s also a lot of fun! And get a wedding coordinator! Our wedding coordinator at Studio 817 helped us work through all of the details we had no idea would pop up! Everything ran seamlessly thanks to her! I think one thing we might have done differently was given ourselves a full year to plan. We planned our wedding in six months! It was a little crazy! We are still amazed we did it!
What was your favorite part of your wedding day?
For me, one of my favorite moments was seeing Vanessa walking down the aisle with her dad. We went the traditional route and didn’t see each other until the ceremony. She was stunning! It was also amazing having so many of our loved ones in one room. The venue was filled with so much love and everyone was so happy; it was beautiful.
