Brooklyn Nuptials

Laura & Julie are the epitome of cool. We love that they opted for a cocktail tour of Brooklyn to celebrate their nuptials! They are laid back, effortless & totally chic.

From the brides....

Everyone says that it's impossible to meet someone at a bar, not in Julie & Laura's case.

Julie & Laura met at the Jukebox at Cubbyhole Bar in the West Village. Laura was picking out songs that she liked when she saw someone's hand come over and start tapping the screen. She turned around and it was Julie. Laura asked Julie what she wanted to hear, when Julie promptly responded, "See You Again" by Miley Cyrus. Laura thought she was cute and Julie thought Laura was cute, too. The two went to another bar with Laura's friends. Julie had ended up missing her last train back to Long Island, and Laura waited with her at a diner until the next train came. While at the diner, where it was brighter than the bars the two had been at, Julie commented,"Oh you have freckles" while she said it she smiled, which made Laura smile too.

For their first date, Julie bought a brand new pair of sunglasses. When Laura saw her walking up the street, she was a little intimidated by how cute Julie looked. On the date, Julie swears that Laura spoke less than 200 words and thought that, when she went to the bathroom, Laura was going to leave. Laura swears that she was quiet because she just wanted to listen to all of Julie's stories and wanted to spend nothing but more time with her.

Five and a half years later, there was no formal engagement or proposal, it was just a discussion and a decision. A decision to throw a kick ass dance party wedding with their friends to celebrate getting to this place and starting their life together. So in six weeks they planned their Night-Out-In-Brooklyn wedding and asked a good friend to officiate. The ceremony was held close to their home at Transmitter Park in Greenpoint. It's a special place for the two of them because they both love the water, not to mention it has a pretty amazing view of the city.

Five and a half years later, Laura talks a lot more, but still likes to listen to Julie's stories.

Mexico Matrimony

Destination weddings are one of our faves! And, let's be honest, in January, we're all ready for a little sunshine in our lives! C & L had such a lovely ceremony, it's making us ready to hop on a plane to Mexico right now! These two are no strangers to love abroad! They met studying in Spain!

About the couple...

Carlin and Lawrence met their first week studying abroad in Seville, Spain in the Fall of 2006. They spent the first four months of their relationship traveling through Europe together before returning home to their respective universities. After finishing school in the South, Carlin graduated and moved out to California to be with Lawrence and to pursue job opportunities. One year later, Carlin and Lawrence moved to New York to pursue graduate school. Lawrence is a practicing real estate attorney for a medium sized New York law firm while Carlin works as a Registered Nurse on a post-surgical unit at a hospital in Manhattan. They spend their free time exploring the city, trying new restaurants, watching movies, hanging out with friends, and spending time with their beagle/doxen, Astro.

In May of 2013, they decided to take a trip to Costa Rica. At the beginning of the trip, after a morning of ziplining, they hiked down to a secluded waterfall where Lawrence proposed. However, unbeknownst to Lawrence, Carlin had also been planning on proposing during the trip! After returning home, they decided to get married in Riviera Maya, Mexico because they had visited the area before and loved the location for a destination wedding to celebrate with friends and family.

A Detroit Institute of Arts Wedding

We're rarely left speechless, but Jeffrey Lewis Bennett Wedding Photography sure wowed us with this gorgeous wedding at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The venue is beyond stunning! It's the perfect space for modern nuptials.

The grooms look so chic in their suits with matching Lanvin sneakers. We love the play on formal & casual combined.

Their 80-foot tablescape was pristine with palm leaves, clean lines and navy blue everywhere! The opulence of the venue is perfectly matched by the exquisite design of this fête!

This is the perfect way to kick off a new year of weddings!

And we adore the love story...

"Vaughan and Van Thomas met in 2005 at a conference in Miami. For the next seven years they lived in different parts of the country and built a friendship over the phone. When Vaughan moved to Hong Kong in 2010 they took the opportunity of increased inconvenience to see if their relationship could go to the next level. Two years later Van Thomas joined Vaughan in Hong Kong which they used as a base to travel throughout Asia. While on a trip to the Philippines the couple got engaged.

The first wedding €œ"brainstorming PDF" followed almost immediately. During a trip to Van Thomas'€™s hometown in Michigan, his sister recommended visiting the recently renovated Kresge Court at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Both Vaughan and Van Thomas fell in love with the venue's architecture, history, and impressive collection. Over the next six months they planned their wedding and relocated to New York. One week prior to their big day, the couple exchanged intimate yet casual vows and were legally wed in Manhattan.

July 19th started with a morning run along the Detroit waterfront promenade, light lunch, and a photo session with the incredible photographer Jeffrey Lewis Bennett. At six in the evening, guests arrived at the Museum greeted with cocktails, heavy hors d'€™oeuvres, and the Horizon String Quartet playing their favorite popular music selections. Once everyone mingled and relaxed the couple invited their four siblings to the top of the gothic staircase to share meaningful readings focused on love with their guests.

Vaughan and Van Thomas then recited emotional vows to each other and toasted to their union. After guests toured the private museum they were sat. The five course candlelight meal was served on an eighty foot table designed by Jen House Design centered in the Great Hall surrounded by fresco ceilings, antique armor, and notably one of Diego Rivera'€™s greatest works. The evening ended with music, dancing, and an abundance of indulgent comfort food. "

Bright Beach Club Ceremony

There is nothing better to help shrug off the winter chill like a beach club wedding! We are absolutely loving the bright pops of pink! And, that floral arch?! Hello, perfection! Excuse us while we drift off into daydream land with this one!

We wanted to hear all about the engagement & the big day!

Ivn told us about the engagement...

"€œI've always known I didn't want a public proposal (just a personal preference) so we got engaged in a suite at the Sofitel in DC. Ed was coming back from a vacation in the Philippines and I picked him up from his flight back to Reagan International. We had a very casual dinner in a restaurant around Adams Morgan and he was itching to get home to our 4-year old Pomeranian, Bogart. While he thought I was driving him home, I dropped him off at the lobby of the Sofitel and gave him the key card to the room. I, together with some friends, had decked it out in decor the night before. There were the staples; music on repeat (Us Against the World by Coldplay -- we would eventually decide this to be our processional song), candles, flowers, champagne, balloons, and bubbles. Yes, bubbles! I also orchestrated a little scavenger hunt of place cards that had photos of us with stories and sentiments of my love for him. The place cards would lead from one to another until it gives away the final clue -- me waiting at the door with Bogart holding the engagement ring tied to his collar. The rest, as they say, is history!"

And about the Wedding...

A casual setting in a nautical town was exactly what Edwin and Bernard hoped for at their Chesapeake Bay Beach Club wedding. For this couple, who considers Maryland their adopted home-state, saying “I do” in a spot that emitted an elegant vibe overlooking the Bay was the easiest wedding decision they made. Through a truly collaborative effort, Edwin, Bernard and Sarah Campbell of Intrigue Designs crafted a vision that was a perfect complement to the charming Tavern Bayside reception. One of the biggest details of Edwin and Bernard’s big day was the breath-taking floral motif. From the ceremony to the reception, white and green hydrangeas, coral peonies, deep pink and quicksand roses along with coral zinnias filled the venue spaces. With a desire to keep their ceremony intimate, this couple stayed true to their wishes and followed through with an unplugged wedding. Displaying quaint chalkboard signs at the entrance that state: “We really want to se your faces, not your devices. Please put away phones and cameras” as their guests completely engaged in the “I do’s.” For future couples planning their wedding, Edwin and Bernard offer the following: "The truth is, you can prepare all you want but know that things may not always happen the way you plan it. Know that a "perfect" wedding does not a good marriage make. If you accept this, then being frustrated over details that "fail" would seem trivial and unnecessary."

Enchanting Outdoor Ceremony

These brides are too cool for school! We love how laid back and beautiful their wedding is! They got all of the tiny details just right and we can't stop drooling over them! The flowers, the belt, that bow tie...can you blame us!? The lovely Alison Slattery Photography filled us in on the special day, including the air guitar playing grandmother!!

Sarah and Lindsay got married on May 24th at the Jamaican Pavillion on Park Jean Drapeau. For those of you who love F1, we had to drive on the circuit to get to the venue, pretty cool!! We had been on weather watch all day and unfortunately minutes before the ceremony it started to pour. We held our breath and just hoped it would clear off. It did!!! Sarah and Lindsay remained so calm during this time, it was very impressive. Their ceremony took place in a beautiful spot, right under a willow tree while family and friends watched as they read their vows to one another. Lindsay's dad officiated the wedding, Jesse who was also a bridesmaid, sang their entrance song and Lindsay's little sister did a reading. Someone special by the name of Pnut, sadly couldn't make the ceremony but was happily watching from home wearing the perfect bow tie for the occasion. Sarah was wearing a beautiful short white dress and turquoise shoes while Lindsay had a fabulous suit tailored for the special day. Both brides looked absolutely stunning. Their faces were never short of a smile for each other and you could feel the love throughout the day.

The ceremony was followed by lawn games and cocktail hour. As people made their way inside for dinner, everyone noticed how much work the brides put into their day. Every place setting was personalized by the girls, with some fun mad libs to do. The centre pieces were flowers made out of maps and candles with mason jars flooded the venue. They also had a fun gift table with some bunting made also from maps, suitcases for cards and old expo 67 paraphernalia including Grandma Hogan's expo entry passport. Dinner began with some speeches and then the taco station opened up. The brides had a first dance that involved everyone and instead of cake they had a table full of assorted delicious donuts. Grandma kicked off the photo booth and rumor has it she may have won the air guitar contest as well. She might be the coolest grandma ever.

Grammy Girls

Oh, you, just a normal afternoon...strolling through Santa Ynez Valley with the ridiculously talented Abi Q Photography, taking dreamy pictures of this gorgeous pair. The best part? This shoot took place the day after these stunning brides were married on the Grammy's by Macklemore & Queen Latifah!

This couple is beyond sweet and in love!

Wendy told us a little about her and Mo's love story...

The day we met was the day that forever changed our lives and kind of made history. We met through a mutual friend at a bar one night in 2012. We were supposed to meet the year before, but because life, the stars, or the cosmos weren’t aligned perfectly, it didn’t happen. There was just something so spiritually perfect about our encounter. It’s as if time stopped and the only thing that mattered was what was in front of us; each other.

From that day on, we were inseparable.  We became best friends or what we called, “Bro’s.” Deep down there was a sense of belongingness, which at times was scary to think about. Was this really it? Is she the one? A lesbian couple? Our bond was undeniable, something inside was telling us we would always be together so we decided to get matching tattoos. ANAM CARA was written on our rib cages with the date 12-12-12. Anam Cara refers to a celtic spiritual belief of souls connecting and bonding. This belief says that when an individual connects completely and openly with another individual, their two souls begin to flow together. This is when you have found your soul friend, your most sacred place in time, your Anam Cara.

We decided to give it a go and officially date early 2013. Acceptance and respect was something that we struggled attaining with some people. We stood strong and together and decided that our love is something no same-sex couple or any couple should be ashamed of. Love is love. We were engaged in April, 2013 before the same-sex marriage law in California passed. When the law passed in June and we were at the West Hollywood Rally, it was one of the most beautiful days in history. The legalizing of love between two human beings of the same sex was a huge step for civil rights.

With this, came an opportunity to attend the Grammy’s and be a part of history by getting married LIVE! We were hesitant at first, not sure if this was going to be real, a hoax, or a prank but we submitted our information to producers. We were sworn to secrecy and not allowed to talk about it with family or friends until the day of. It all became real after we left rehearsal at the Staples Center. We were legally wed live on national television on January 26th, in front of millions, with 32 other straight, same-sex, young, and old couples, during Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s performance of “Same Love” by Queen Latifah and serenaded by Madonna after!  We had a standing ovation, everyone crying, and even got Jay-Z, Beyonce, Paul McCartney, Katy Perry, and a slew of others congratulating us. It was beautiful. It was epic. It was a moment in history that demonstrated hope, acceptance, change, and love.

Chattanooga Darlings

We were ecstatic when Cassandra Zetta  sent this gorgeous styled elopement over to us! I mean, honestly, with these two!? On top of the fact that they are totally swoon-worthy babes, they are so happy we can feel it! We love that they kept it casual, but not too casual, they still rocked boutineers!

The photographer said...

"The elopement took place in downtown Chattanooga. The styling, along with the boutineers, goes to Jaime Smialek of She Wore It AnywaysFor this styled elopement shoot, after choosing an urban location, we opted for semi-casual outfits for the models, rich with shades of blue. The sunglasses added a bit of attitude and playfulness to the session."

Yes, please!
