A Fall Coastal New England Fête

Tell us your love story!

We met while working at Disneyland. Kate was a photographer, and Olivia was a Padawan in the Jedi Training Academy. We know we met about a year (or two?) before we actually remember each other because somehow we were friends on Facebook. It wasn’t until someone else involved in the show developed a crush on Kate (and Olivia decided to play matchmaker) that we started interacting and hanging out. It was all fireworks and chemistry from there.

Tell us about the proposal!

Over the summer of 2016, Olivia planned out a (hopefully) super personal and surprise proposal with some help from Kate’s sister, Eliza. In September, we left NYC for a weekend in New England “for Eliza’s birthday”, who was coming in from LA. While the sunrise hot air balloon ride didn’t happen due to high altitude winds, the breakfast picnic at Mack’s Apples, a childhood destination for apple picking for Kate and her sisters, went pretty well. Olivia supplied a picnic basket full of bagels, coffee, mimosas, and a custom engagement ring for Kate. Later that night, there was one more surprise for Kate: instead of the chill hang out at her best friend’s house, Olivia had planned an engagement party with family and friends to celebrate the good news!

When did you know you were meant to be together?

After a few heartbreaks, Kate wasn’t dating or interested in a relationship. But a few months into hanging out, Kate started to fall for Olivia after seeing what a selfless, compassionate, and kind human being she is. It was a hot summer day in Southern CA when Olivia stopped without notice to buy food and water for a homeless veteran. It was that random act of kindness that made Kate think that this was the person she could spend the rest of her life with. For Olivia, it came little by little, but a lot quicker. Just getting to know Kate and learning how strong she is and how fiercely she loves, Olivia knew that Kate was the one she would fight for and choose every day.

Going into wedding planning, what did you definitely know?

We definitely knew that every decision we made would be made together and would reflect both of our personalities, styles, and love. We wanted a fall coastal New England setting, an unplugged ceremony, a variety of food, and for our guests to have fun!

What was easy and what was difficult during the planning process? What surprised you?

For Kate, she thought it would be easier to make decisions because she works in the wedding industry and also went to school for event planning. She was surprised at how difficult a lot of the choices ended up being for her.

We knew the day would go quickly, but just how quickly is so surprising.

Anything advice for couples planning now?

The best advice we can give is to stay true to who you are as individuals and as a couple. There is a lot of outside pressure and opinions from people who forget the day is not about them, but should be about celebrating your love and marriage.

Looking back, what was your favorite part of your wedding day?

Our favorite parts about the wedding day were all the little moments that made us laugh, like the flower girls getting lost at the back of the aisle, and Kate forgetting she was supposed to write down a ceremony reading for her sister. The confetti dance was a big hit too!

Tell us your love story!

We met at a NYE party in Puerto Vallarta MX when one of us lived in NYC & the other in London. We talked & danced for a couple of hours before Atınç had to rush off to catch an early morning flight. We emailed a couple of times after getting home, but the inertia of lives on different continents swept us in different directions & we fell out of touch. Then, in late August of the same year, on a crowded dance floor in Province Town MA, we met again completely by accident. And we’ve been together ever since.

What about the proposal?

It was a comedy of errors. We planned to meet in Philly for a romantic weekend where Dan was going to pop the question. But he lost the engagement gift in a London taxi just before heading to the airport, forgot his passport in the ensuing chaos & as a result missed his flight. He re-routed to NY the next day & with jangled nerves proposed over champagne & oysters at Aquagrill in Soho. Atinc said yes.

Going into the wedding planning, what did you definitely know?

Dan definitely knew he wanted a small intimate wedding. Atinc knew he definitely wanted a big fabulous wedding.

What surprised you during planning? What was easy, what was difficult?

How much time, patience & compromising it took. Even with a wedding planner.

Any advice for couples planning weddings now? Anything you would have done differently or anything you’d like to add?

We ended up with big fabulous wedding that felt intimate because it all took place within a few blocks of where we live.

What was your favorite part of your wedding day?

Hearing each other’s vows & our friends’ speeches & toasts.
