A Muggle Matrimony
How did you meet?
We actually met on okcupid. The first date was dinner and it went really well, so we went to trivia with some of Sami's friends afterward. I could tell there was something special about her.
Tell us about the proposal!
I (Suzi) collect handmade dolls and had one commissioned for Sami that looked like her. One day after work, she told me to go into the doll room. She had dressed her doll and my favorite doll in wedding outfits and put candles around them. The ring box was in her doll's lap. It was adorable. Since I knew she was going to propose (just didn't know exactly when/how), I had her ring waiting in my closet already.
When did you know you were meant to be together?
We knew we were meant to be together when we realized that all we want to do in life is make it happy for each other and always make each other feel loved and secure.
Going into wedding planning, what did you definitely know?
We definitely knew that it had to be Harry Potter themed, that we wanted a beautiful rustic setting, and that we wanted to invite as many of our friends and family members as possible. Photography was very important to us as well.
What surprised you during wedding planning? What was easy? What was hard?
Surprising: The long gap between the first stage of planning (venue, guest list, choosing caterer) and the later stage (sending invites, etc).
Easy: We already knew which caterer we wanted, we'd had their food at the farmers market and beer/bourbon/BBQ festivals.
Hard: Deciding on dresses for our huge wedding parties. What we ended up doing was settling on a color and letting all the women choose their own dresses in varying shades. It actually looked great and let them show their individual styles, and have a dress they would actually want to wear again.
What do you wish you knew going into the planning process?
I wish I had known that we would not need nearly as many cupcakes as we ordered. They were delicious, but sadly, many went uneaten.
Anything you want to tell couples who are in the midst of planning their weddings now?
Don't drive yourself crazy with the tiny details of the day or with the idea that you need to lose weight to make everything perfect. Your fiancée loves you the way you already are. Also, we wish we hadn't forgotten the cake knife!
What was your favorite part of the day?
Our favorite parts were the first look/walk in the woods and the photo shoot right after the ceremony. It was amazing to see each other looking so beautiful and we were so excited and happy to be getting married.
