Modern New York
Tell us your love story!
We met playing basketball when Lauren joined the NYC Gay Basketball League. Best decision she ever made! Fran had been playing for a while and was one of the captains. She chose Lauren for her team because she thought she was good (first pick!) but she also thought she looked nice. We’ve played on the same team since.
What about the proposal?
Fran proposed and the only thing that she wanted was for it to be a big surprise. We went out to Austin where Lauren is from and stayed at Lauren’s favorite hotel, the Hotel San Jose. We had a perfect day hiking and hanging out by the lake and when we got back to the hotel Fran proposed.
When did you know that you were meant to be with each other?
Lauren: Pretty immediately. We spent several months as just friends so it wasn’t love at first sight. Although, I do remember seeing Fran for the first time and she stuck out as someone I had a feeling I was going to know. After we got together, we knew immediately that this was it. We’ve spent every day with the intention of being with each other forever.
Going into the wedding planning, what did you definitely know?
We definitely knew we wanted a wedding in New York City. Fran is from New York and we met here, so it was the most meaningful to us. We also knew that we wanted it to be a big dance party with all of our friends that have been such a big part of who we are throughout the years.
What surprised you during planning?
Not too many surprises during planning. I think that our venue made it really easy because everything was included and everything they were offering was perfect. Budgeting in NYC was difficult, but also not surprising at all.
Is there anything you wish you knew while you were planning your wedding that you know now?
That unless you’re a really crafty person, the DIY stuff probably ends up costing just as much as paying for the finished product.
Any advice for couples planning weddings now?
Fran: Everybody said this to us but I didn’t quite get it until later, no matter the cost or if you weren’t able to get everything you wanted while planning, it will all be worth it and you’ll just remember it as perfect.
What was your favorite part of your wedding day?
Lauren: My favorite part of the wedding was walking down the aisle and seeing Fran standing there. It was such a beautiful moment and we could feel so much love surrounding us.
Fran: Standing with Lauren during our ceremony and seeing one room filled with everyone we love – surreal.
