Who says you have to get out of bed for your engagement shoot?!
Tell us your love story!
When they met online at the end of 2013, Rebecca had recently moved back to Los Angeles, where she was running a marketing firm, and Rae had just begun a grueling five-year surgical residency there. With their hectic schedules, they exchanged texts and phone calls for a couple of months and had about five rescheduled first dates before they finally met in person just a few days before the New Year. They sat, drinking coffee on a sunny December day, discovering their many similarities, discussing their passions, laughing, and finding an immediate connection. Leaving that date, they both were unsure of the other’s feelings, but they were quite sure of their own. They had fallen for each other that afternoon, and they made plans to see each other again the very next day. They have been madly in love and inseparable ever since.
When did you know that you were meant to be with each other?
Rebecca had moved back to her hometown of Los Angeles from San Francisco after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma to undergo chemotherapy. She met Rae a few months after finishing treatment, and she was still recovering in many ways. Despite the ups and downs of her health, Rae always stood by her, and through this, Rebecca saw the strength of their bond, which could endure through sickness and in health. Rae met Rebecca at the start of surgical residency, and soon after, she started the toughest, most demanding year of her program. Despite a taxing schedule and countless sleepless nights on call, through it all, Rebecca was always there for her, whether it was making sure she had dinner waiting after an 18-hour day or encouraging her when she felt defeated. It was this devotion that showed Rae she had found a once in a lifetime kind of love.
What about the proposal?
In December 2015, two years after they had first met, Rae surprised Rebecca with an “impromptu” mid-week getaway to Big Sur, a gorgeous stretch of undeveloped California coastline. Little did Rebecca know, Rae had been planning the trip and the proposal for months. A few months prior, with the help of Rebecca’s sister, Rae had started working with a jewelry designer to create the perfect engagement ring for Rebecca and made plans to propose during this trip. They packed up the car in the morning, but it wasn’t until after they had gotten on the road that Rae even told Rebecca where they were going. After spending a relaxing evening drinking wine on their balcony overlooking the beautiful redwoods and mountains, they woke up the next day with plans to explore the area. Rae planned to take Rebecca for a hike down to the coastline and then head to Pfeiffer Beach where she planned to pop the question. A bundle of nerves, hoping everything would go as planned, Rae hid the ring box in her backpack, and they started their day. As the sun began to make its descent, they headed to Pfeiffer Beach, known for its dramatic sunsets, where the sun will shine through a keyhole in a coastal rock formation, making for spectacular and romantic views.
After strolling on the beach and taking in the views, Rae led Rebecca over to a blanket covered in candles and a bottle of champagne. Rae got on one knee, pulled out the ring, and asked Rebecca to marry her. After saying “yes,” Rebecca, in shock, asked how she managed to set all of this up. Rae pointed to a figure standing beside a rock a hundred feet away, and Rebecca’s sister started running toward them, camera in hand, having captured every moment. In the time leading up to the proposal, Rae had planned for Rebecca’s sister to drive up from Los Angeles that same morning to set everything up, as well as hide out and capture everything on camera. After lots of hugs and tears, they celebrated by sharing a bottle of champagne on the beach and watching the sunset over the ocean.
