Arizona Nuptials

How We Met...

Chris and his friends had been out to dinner and decided to finish off the evening with a drink at their favorite lounge a few blocks away. As they were arriving, Brian was on his way out and quite literally ran into Chris’ friend Rachel, knocking her over onto the ground. As he helped her up, Brian noticed Rachel’s vintage Twister T-shirt and they got to talking (This is the same shirt Chris and his friends had mercilessly teased Rachel for at dinner). Having witnessed the incident from afar, Chris came racing up to check on his friend. Always scheming, Rachel invited Brian to stay and have a drink with the group. Chris and Brian hit it off and they decided to meet up a week later for dinner… the rest is history! You never know when a friend’s questionable fashion choice will lead to a life-changing evening!

Engagement...

Brian proposed to Chris on a fall evening at their favorite neighborhood restaurant in Washington, DC. Buck’s Fishing and Camping is a small, comfortable place that was the first restaurant they had gone out to after having moved to DC several years before. Brian planned to surprise Chris with his proposal at dessert, with the ring arriving inside a small pumpkin. As they ordered desert, Chris noticed Brian was getting fidgety and looking a little pale. He asked Brian if he wasn’t feeling well, and if they should skip the movie they had planned to see after dinner. Well, as soon as Chris spied the tiny pumpkin arriving (not the sorbet he’d ordered), he realized what was about to happen… so he cautiously opened the top to the carved out pumpkin. Not known for getting bogged down with details, Brian hadn’t thought through all the steps opening the pumpkin to get to the ring would take. Brian began to get even more pale and restless and started to sweat! Chris laboriously and intentionally, slowly took off the pumpkin lid, opened the protective bag covering the outer box, untied the bow around the box, opened the box and took out the ring case, and then finally opened the case to uncover the ring! By this time, Brian had found his way onto his knee beside the table and through quiet tears, asked Chris to marry him! The best part was that a bunch of friends had found out this was going to happen, and sneaked into the restaurant to witness this event! It was the perfect way to end such an evening, surrounded by friends and champagne, and lots of well-wishes from neighboring tables.

The Wedding...

Chris and Brian met in Arizona so the state has a special place in their hearts. Chris grew up in Tucson and Brian, originally from Wisconsin, relocated to Scottsdale for work a few years before the couple met. The varied landscapes and many diverse cultures of the desert southwest are all part of what Brian and Chris love about their ‘home’ state. So when it came time to select a venue, it unquestionably had to be held at The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain, just outside of Tucson. Nestled in a saguaro filled canyon in the high desert, the property and its setting fulfilled every wish the two could imagine for their ceremony and celebration. Since most of their guests would be arriving from out of state, they made sure to welcome them with treats and amenities all sourced from the area (mesquite cutting boards with cactus candy, pepitas, jalapeno popcorn, and mini-pecan pies). Activities like a morning hike and sunrise yoga in the desert invited guests to immerse themselves in the place that Brian and Chris love so much. Of course, the stunning Arizona sunset had a role as well as the stunning backdrop to their evening ceremony. Fun Arizona touches found their way into moments throughout the evening such as cocktail hour beer service provided by Tia the ‘beer burro’ and a Native American hoop dancer performing during the transition between dinner and dancing – and finally, building your own s’mores by the campfires outside under the expansive starry night of the Arizona skies.
