From Kristine (of Kristine Tsai Wedding Planning):
The theme for this shoot was modern romance. John, our photographer, and I visited Testarossa during the summer and immediately fell in love with the venue. The winery has so much history, a gorgeous hillside, and hidden intimate spaces perfect for couple portraits. Their dramatic wine cave was the perfect location for our shoot. I wanted to combine the romance of the winery with modern touches.
The color scheme was inspired by a purple and coral running shoe. Jeanne was amazing and created gorgeous and bold colored floral centerpieces. We added touches of rose gold and copper with candles, metallic chargers, and I made the light up heart for the sweetheart table. The invitations and place cards added a clean, modern touch. The sweetheart table screamed for sparkles. It was the perfect opportunity to use plum sequined linen and paired it with a rose gold Mrs & Mrs sign.
John and I both wanted to find a real couple and Rhiannon and Ashley were perfect. They’ve been together for 11 years and have been talking about finally tying the knot. I loved picking out their dresses (provided by Ju.Lee Collection and Borrowing Magnolia) and we opted for a darker lip since we shot in the fall, but I love the classic look. Jeanne created matching but different bouquets, a perfect touch of individuality.
Because every wedding should be fun and light hearted, wine and cookies were the edible feature for this shoot. We created fun signs reminding guests to “Eat Cookies” and “Drink Wine." While we refrained from opening the wine bottles, we did have our share of cookies that day.
But most rewarding of all, from seeing 10 years of their relationship in front of them, to rushes of emotions and butterflies, it was an emotional day for Rhiannon and Ashley, just like a wedding day. And that made the day and the photos magical. When discussing the shoot, John and I felt strongly about featuring two brides. We both feel the LGBTQ community is underrepresented in wedding industry media. When I approached Rhiannon and Ashley about the shoot, they felt the same way.
“We were most interested in participating in the photo shoot because of the vision behind the shoot. With the legalization of marriage in the United States last June, this just felt really special to us. There has been progress in featuring LGBTQ individuals across different media avenues, but it still generates discussion when you see a gay couple featured in a commercial. Our hope is that one day it doesn't, so the more that underrepresented groups are made visible throughout mainstream media, we can hopefully shift national perspective and attitudes. For example, often same-sex couples are referred to as gay or lesbian couples, but we're just couples.”
