In 2009, Kat and Tracy met in Oakland, California. They worked in the same profession and talked on the phone quiet a bit. One day on a call, when Tracy said, “bless her heart,” Kat became curious about Tracy. Soon they discovered that they both had family from the South and that they had so much more in common. The pair began dating in the fall of 2009 and almost immediately, they both knew that we were meant to be together. On the night of June 9th, 2012, Kat surprised Tracy by driving to the beach. She had a blanket, champagne and a heartfelt proposal. Kat picked out the most amazing champagne diamond ring from a local San Francisco jeweler called Red Start Designs.
"We were engaged for two years before we got married. We grappled with how to make our wedding reflect our relationship. Being queer lent itself to creating our own meaningful wedding. This was exciting and also overwhelming. We envisioned a celebration of love that was unique, meaningful, creative, laid back and FUN. We knew wanted the wedding to be in Oakland since this is where we met and fell in love. We chose to have our wedding at The Humanist Hall, a progressive infrastructure, committed to action for social justice and ecological sanity. The Hall was perfect because it was reflection of the ways that we try to live our lives. It was important for us to be intentional about the ways in which we were contributing to our community. We knew wanted to support the local economy, queer folks, folks of color and women who owned their own businesses. Even more importantly, we wanted to find folks that were excellent at their craft and were fun to be around. We were so fortunate to find Chanda Eddens-Daniels from A Monique Affair who completely listened to us and helped us to manage our feelings of overwhelm.
Chanda guided us to create the celebration that we envisioned.
Our wedding and reception were even more beautiful than we had imagined. It was warm, full of love, with so many magical elements. The Monique Affair team & Charlotte and Daughters completely transformed the hall and the outdoor space to reflect Kat and I's relationship. Our ceremony was held in the backyard complete with hay bales. Ryan Erev, our Officiate, lead us in a meaningful ceremony that incorporated our family, friends, love letters and vows. Our community's love beamed through in the details of the wedding as our close friends had helped us to make the decorations and guest gifts. We were honored to have friends and family join us from all over the country so we wrote each person a letter to thank them for their support and love. Each detail of the reception was handled with grace and professionalism by the team from A Monique Affair and Simply Bliss so that we could be present with our guests and could truly enjoy ourselves. Chef Yulanda of Simply Bliss nourished us with delicious vegetarian food. Lila Owens, of Cupcakin' Bakeshop, blew everyone away with her cupcakes. OmeDJ brought the party and kept the dance floor full. We danced the night away until our loved ones sent us off with sparklers. We did not want it to end. It was truly an amazing day!!! We are so thankful to Kelly Pulieo for the absolutely gorgeous photographs so we can relive it."
