A Beautiful Beach Wedding
Tell us your love story!
They met at the shoe store they were both working at. Ayron was the assistant manager, and CC was a sales associate. When CC was hired, the store manager told Ayron that she would really like the new associate he just hired---and that was definitely true. CC was attending college in Milwaukee, and came back to Madison to work on the weekends (which was about an hour a way). CC and Ayron worked together for over a year, and randomly started chatting online. They would talk for hours, and got along great. They started hanging out, and really hit it off. Finally, Ayron decided to tell CC how she felt because CC was oblivious to the subtle hints that Ayron was dropping. Ayron told CC that she wanted to date her, and CC said that she was into Ayron too, so they began a relationship. They were together long distance for about a year, and then Ayron found a job in Milwaukee, and moved to be with CC. They have been together ever since! They have been together since 5/6/07--11 ½ years.
What about the proposal?
CC planned a trip to New York she rented an awesome flat in Queens with the plan that she was going to propose to Ayron. CC really wanted to go to the botanical gardens, which Ayron thought was odd, because she really had no interest in the gardens, but CC knew Ayron would really like it. It was a hot day at the end of August, and riding the subway was miserable. For some reason, CC insisted on bringing her coat—which was weird and should have been a dead giveaway. They walked around the gardens, and stopped at the lily pond outside of the atrium. The lilies were is bloom and it was beautiful. It was a weekday, and not many people were around. CC took Ayron to a bench next to the lilies (she was sweating bullets), and sat her down, CC explained how she wanted to spend the rest of her life with Ayron. She explained that she knew that Ayron really wanted to get engaged, and she pulled the box out of her coat, and popped the question. It was perfect because Ayron is an introvert, and wouldn’t have wanted many people around. Ayron was shocked because they had looked at rings, and she had picked a much smaller ring, but CC being CC went on Ayron’s Pinterest, and found her dream ring pinned, and that was the one she had purchased. Of course, Ayron said yes on 8/31/2016.
When did you know that you were meant to be with each other?
Ayron and CC didn’t go into the relationship thinking this is the person I want to be with forever, instead, they just sort of rolled with the punches. They saw each other through some really hard times, and that support and devotion is what solidified their relationship. There really wasn’t one defining moment, but they couldn’t see being without each other.
Going into the wedding planning, what did you definitely know?
We knew we wanted an intimate destination wedding. We only wanted our closest friends and family at the ceremony/reception. We also knew we wanted to have delicious food, at one big table, under the moonlight and string lights. We wanted it to feel like dinner with your family on a really important day.
What surprised you during planning? What was easy, what was difficult?
Honestly, Darren from Bliss Wedding Spectacular was amazing. We started planning two years in advance, and it was easy. He gave us options, and we made choices, and that was pretty much it. The rest we left in his hands, and it was awesome! If anyone ever asks me if they should get a wedding planner, I say yes, especially for a destination wedding. It allowed for us to enjoy the day, and just be with each other.
Is there anything you wish you knew while you were planning your wedding that you know now?
Nope. We let Darren worry about that, and he had all our bases covered.
Any advice for couples planning weddings now? Anything you would have done differently or anything you’d like to add?
First, get a wedding planner. Second, get a great photographer, and spend the extra money for more time with them. Look at their Instagram, Facebook, and websites to see if their style is what you are looking for. Third, try not to stress over the little things, it will all come together. Fourth, remember this special day is about the two of you. Don’t let others dictate what your day is about—because it is about the two of you and love you have for each other.
What was your favorite part of your wedding day?
Our favorite part of the day was walking down the aisle. CC walked to the “Lava” song (which is completely perfect for her personality), and Ayron walked to Sara B’s "I Choose You." CC is a big kid at heart, so a song from a Pixar short is the perfect touch. Ayron and CC have gone to many Sara B concerts together, and so that is part of the reason Ayron picked “I Choose You." Meeting at the alter made the day feel real, and that we were finally getting married.
Honestly, we weren’t sure that it would ever be legal for us to get married, so this day was even more special. Ayron always said that she would only get married if it was legal. She didn’t just want a commitment ceremony, because they were already committed to each other, but when same sex marriage was legalized we finally had the option.
Also, we got married on National Coming Out Day in 2018. It was not intentional, and we didn’t even realize it until we told the LGBT+ youth group that we volunteer with what the date was, and they told us.
