Going into the wedding planning, what did you definitely know?
Having both moved around for school, we were most looking forward to the chance to have all our favorite people from across the country in one place for just a really great party to celebrate the day. We knew we wanted an outdoor ceremony, followed by a lot of champagne, laughs and dancing.
What surprised you during planning? What was easy, what was difficult?
There was just so much to learn as we went along, about everything from when to send out invites to the timing of the day. Wedding etiquette is weird, and specific, but it's nice to be in 2018 where people are less adherent to those strict norms. Also, we found that for some reason people don't necessarily expect all the traditional wedding things as much as they might for straight couples, and it's kind of nice to be able to play around with that and to really plan out the day that you want.
Is there anything you wish you knew while you were planning your wedding that you know now?
If giving a couples speech at the end of the toasts, write that bad boy out. Your wedding day is insane, and filled with so much emotion, and you will 100% not remember a single thing that you wanted to say once you get up there.
Any advice for couples planning weddings now? Anything you would have done differently or anything you’d like to add?
This is so cliché, but just try to slow down and enjoy the day. Make sure you delegate day-of tasks to friends and family! People genuinely want to help, and this will free you up to actually be in the moment and not worried about whether the candles have been lit or the bar is open. Also, it helps if you just accept that some things will go wrong. Whether it's rain, or you both forget to grab your bouquets before you walk down the aisle (oops), just roll with it because those aren't the memories you're going to take with you in the end.
What was your favorite part of your wedding day?
It was just the best day, from start to finish. The feeling of happiness from having all of your friends and family in one place, to wish you well and help you celebrate your love, is hard to describe. In a day full of highlights, the best part was probably the reception and after-party when we could finally have a glass of champagne and visit with all our loved ones.
