Lake Tahoe Winter Wedding
Tell us your love story!
We met at a house party in College Station, Texas. We were both visiting friends that were going to college at Texas A&M. We remained friends and would occasionally run into each other for a few years after we originally met. A few years later, Maci sent me a message and we started talking. While I originally kept my distance, I finally gave in and we went on a date. I realized how completely stupid I was for waiting so long to go out with her! We have been inseparable ever since.
What about the proposal?
The week before Maci proposed, we had discussed having a Day Date together. We both have hectic and crazy work schedules, so we try and utilize our days off together when we can! The morning of the proposal, instead of having a Day Date, Maci decided it was a great day for some Spring Cleaning… later to find out the only way for her to not completely panic was to stay busy. Finally, after the house was clean we decided to grill some lunch. After we put the food on the grill, we grabbed a glass of wine and sat on the back patio. While we were talking, Maci pulled out a note and a ring from her back pocket and got down on one knee. I was stunned and had no idea what she said. Once I FINALLY clued into what was happening, I screamed “YES!” We laughed and cried long enough to see heavy smoke coming out of the grill. We opened the grill and realized we had completely burnt every single piece of meat on the grill. It was the best proposal I could ever ask for!
When did you know that you were meant to be with each other?
Maci will tell you she knew that she would marry me the moment she saw me, as supported by several friends she told that night. As for me, I was a little slower to the idea. I think the moment I knew we were meant to be was a night after we got back from a short summer get away, just the two of us. It was the most perfect weekend vacation. When I was reflecting on it, I couldn’t imagine going on another vacation, another weekend trip or another day without Maci in my life.
Going into the wedding planning, what did you definitely know?
After Maci asked me to marry her, the proposal we sat down and talked about the things we knew we wanted for our wedding day. We knew we wanted our closest family present and we knew we wanted something that was “us.” Everything else we decided to plan as we went and try and enjoy being engaged!
What surprised you during planning? What was easy, what was difficult?
Well, we were in the middle of planning an awesome wedding at a beautiful venue in north Austin when I decided that is not what I envisioned for our wedding day. I wasn’t enjoying the planning, nothing we decided on felt right. Maci was completely supportive and agreed that we needed something that fit us me. So, we scrapped the original plan and decided to start over. My parents were married in Lake Tahoe so when the idea to get married there was presented, we couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else! It was so amazing how easily the planning came once we figured out what was right for our wedding day.
Something else that surprised us, was the blizzard that hit South Lake Tahoe for the three days prior to our wedding! We had planned to get married on the beach around the lake, but with all the snow, that logistically wasn’t going to happen. While I was super stressed and sad our original plan wasn’t going to work out, it ended up making for the most amazing pictures and memories. Our photographer stood in waist deep snow capturing our photos!
Is there anything you wish you knew while you were planning your wedding that you know now?
Don’t get sucked into trying to make a “perfect day” for all of your guests, try and focus on what will make you both happy. Your guests will enjoy whatever you have planned and at the end of the day, this is something you both will remember forever. It should be about you both, the love you share and the life you are starting together. It is so easy to forget that while planning a wedding.
Any advice for couples planning weddings now? Anything you would have done differently or anything you’d like to add?
Enjoy it! It goes by SO FAST! I swear I blinked and we were already celebrating one month together! Don’t worry about the little things, once we were done, none of that stuff mattered anyways! It’s hard to do in the moment, but just try to keep it in the back of your mind.
What was your favorite part of your wedding day?
For three days prior to our wedding day, there was a blizzard in South Lake Tahoe. It was snowing so hard you couldn’t walk outside without sunglasses or ski googles. You couldn’t see the mountain or the lake. On the morning of our wedding, the sun was shining and there was four feet of beautiful white snow covering the ground! The lake and the mountains were a gorgeous backdrop to our wedding. Looking back, our wedding day wouldn’t have been the same without the mounds of snow. Not only did I get to marry the most beautiful woman on the Earth, but we got to do it in one of the most beautiful settings. --- Kyla
We decided to write our own wedding vows early on in the wedding planning. While it was a little nerve wrecking to speak my truest feelings out loud in front of our family and friends, it was completely worth it. Hearing Kyla’s vows out loud was the best moment of my life. --- Maci
