Tell us how you met and fell in love!

We met in college at the first rugby practice of the season. What started as friendly competition during sprints around the field evolved into a wonderful friendship. Before we knew it, we were in love!

Was there a proposal? Tell us about it!

We both wanted a ring but Autumn wanted to be surprised – luckily Mary enjoys grand romantic gestures, though not so much surprises. Mary invited their families from out of town to celebrate with them. She just barely managed to maintain the surprise long enough to propose in a beautiful Brooklyn park with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop. Autumn planned ahead and had the ring for Mary on hand. She proposed in front of their families, a delivery guy, and some garbage bags outside of the restaurant afterwards.

Are you planning your wedding right away or giving yourself some time to just be engaged?

We jumped right into planning and set the date in June 2018. We wanted to give ourselves enough time to pull together a wedding big enough for our large families and rugby teams.

What’s the best thing you’ve learned from your spouse-to-be?

Autumn - I’ve learned so much from Mary it’s hard to pick one thing. What jumps out is Mary’s strength in areas that I am most weak. Specifically, her willingness to serve others no matter the cost to herself. She is also exceedingly patient and those things go hand in hand when you take care of the people that you love. Basically, I’ve learned how to love well.

Mary - The most important of the many things I have learned from Autumn is that love isn’t earned – it is given freely. Like when people really love you, they don’t have expectations of you. They love you for who you are, they love you regardless of what you do, or don’t do. Basically, I’ve learned what love really is.

What’s your favorite part of your relationship?

Our commitment to honest communication. It can be really hard but it’s is invaluable.
