Lakeside Michigan Vows

Tell us your love story!

Matthew and I originally met each other on Okcupid. For our first date, we went to the Edmund P. Joyce Center at Notre Dame to see the Harlem Globetrotters. We talked through the game and actually left early so that we could talk quietly without yelling to each other. There were no long pauses or awkward silences - we connected immediately. After we met, we spent nearly every day together. Many of our dates consisted of long walks at local parks and trips to Lake Michigan. Though we have fond memories, we have yet to attend another Globetrotters game. Turns out that we were more interested in each other than in comedy basketball.

What about the proposal?

Matthew proposed to me. We had just returned from a Christmas party hosted by Matthew’s extended family. Honestly, I was tired and somewhat ornery at the time. I was making chicken soup and I turned around to see Matt with a ring. I said, “Are you serious?!” followed quickly by, “Of course!”

When did you know that you were meant to be with each other?

Jake: We had spent the day playing hooky at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. I never miss work but it was a spontaneous decision that Matt convinced me to make. It was so much - that was the day I knew it was meant to be.

Matt: We had spent the day at Michigan Adventures pretty early into our relationship, and were pretty tired after a super fun day of rides and water slides. We got into our first fight, and it was over what dresses our future bridesmaids would wear. After twenty minutes of heated debate, we both realized how ridiculous we were being and began laughing. Having that moment of laughter after what was a very tense moment brought me a lot of comfort, and I knew that he was something special that I didn’t want to let go.

Going into the wedding planning, what did you definitely know?

We definitely knew that we wanted an outdoor wedding. As two nature-lovers, this was a very important aspect for both of us. We also knew that we wanted casual food that we both love. Ultimately we had stone-fired pizza and donuts for dessert.

What surprised you during planning? What was easy, what was difficult?

Matt had worked for an event planner when we first started dating, so we had a bit of a head start with all of the planning. Considering that our first fight was about bridesmaids dresses, we actually agreed on a lot of the details as we progressed in the planning. The biggest hurdle we came upon was what to do for music, since Matt is more of a dancer than Jake. We ended up having a great playlist and bonfire at the same time, so we both got a bit of what we wanted.

Is there anything you wish you knew while you were planning your wedding that you know now?

We had a good reference with Matt’s experience planning, but the biggest thing we wish we had known is that most of the things you dread doing (like gathering addresses for invites), really don’t take long to do and it’s much, much better to face those less-fun tasks head on and finish them as soon as possible.

Any advice for couples planning weddings now? Anything you would have done differently or anything you’d like to add?

Make a timeline of your day/weekend as you begin talking with your wedding vendors! We had a detailed timeline of our weekend that we gave out to visiting family, vendors, and the photographer that helped the whole event go on just like we planned. The sooner you can get that organized, the better!

What was your favorite part of your wedding day?

Matt: I loved taking photos with Jake. We had such an amazing photographer (who is also a dear friend) and we were able to capture some really fun, intimate moments together. The weather was so nice and the leaves were just begging to turn, we ended up getting amazing shots and having a blast the whole time.

Jake: I absolutely loved every minute of the wedding, but my favorite parts were the tiny chunks of time that Matt and I had alone together. Those intimate moments will remain in my memory forever.
