Mel made the first move. Well, cyber move. We met online and it was fireworks from date one at a coffee shop on Roncesvelles Avenue in Toronto. Since that first date we have shared so many adventures together from our first trip together to Mexico navigating the cobblestone streets with a broken ankle to two weeks in Australia meeting all of Fel’s family. We have added to our family by adopting another dog this year and spend our weekends and spare time at dog parks, hiking and discovering new things together.
What about the proposal?
After a night out at one of our favorite restaurants Ruby Watch Co. I (Fel) surprised Mel with an engraved vintage lock and suggested we take our dog on a late night stroll to the Humber Bridge to lock it on the bridge. It was there that I got down on one knee and popped the question.
Fel: For me there isn’t an exact moment. Mel showered me with love and kindness from the very beginning of our relationship. She makes every day with her easy and special. She is truly my best friend and I cannot imagine my life without her.
Mel: I feel like I should be able to pick out an exact moment, but truth be told there have been many moments with Fel. It came down to just knowing that this person makes my life brighter and I could not imagine not spending every day with her. Our relationship is so easy and supportive, even with everyday life challenges.
But if I could pinpoint one moment early on into our relationship - On our first
Going into the wedding planning, what did you definitely know?
We knew that we wanted a smaller wedding with our closest friends and family. As well, we knew we wanted the location at our favorite pizzeria, where we had gotten to know the amazing staff and fell in love with the food.
What surprised you during planning? What was easy, what was difficult?
We had said from the start we wanted to plan and try to make everything ourselves and it snow balled from there. Keeping track of everything is key and making lists/spreadsheets was a life saver to ensure that we stayed on budget and didn’t double up on anything.
Is there anything you wish you knew while you were planning your wedding that you know now?
To bring a second pair of comfortable shoes and eat more! By the end of the night your feet will be killing and you will be starving so make sure that you eat and have a second pair of shoes at the ready so you can dance the night away.
Any advice for couples planning weddings now? Anything you would have done differently or anything you’d like to add?
Keep it simple and let your family help. Making a schedule to ensure your family and or bridal party know what is needed from them and at what time is helpful. You don’t want your wedding day to feel like a crazy rush. We were so lucky that our families were all-hands-on-deck on the day and the staff at Defina was relaxed and professional which put us at ease.
What was your favorite part of your wedding day?
Fel: It’s hard to pinpoint my favorite moment from the best day of my life. If I had to pick probably the check in moments Mel and I had throughout the night. You think you can stick together the entire evening however with everyone there for the both of you it’s good idea to divide and conquer and meet up at various moments
Mel: Standing with Fel and repeating our vows to each other was a beautiful
