Tell us your love story!

It all began just before the Valencia Community College Spring semester of 2008. A very sheltered Lizette was actively searching for friends in her classes by looking up their names on Facebook. Something many people have referred to as "stalking" but that is neither here nor there. She came across Megan's Facebook page and decided to send her a message just to say hi and that they would be in the same Calculus II class. Megan, thinking that Lizette was a total stalker, instantly replied with "How do you know I'm taking Calc II at Valencia?" Lizette explained how she had gotten her name and reassured her she wasn't a stalker. The first day of Calculus II came and Lizette was sitting in the very front row with a friend, and Megan sat a few seats over. As the attendance was called, Lizette made it a point to wave her arm frantically as her name was called so that Megan would notice her. Unfortunately, Megan completely ignored her and as soon as class was over jetted out of the classroom as if the building was on fire. The next few classes continued in the same fashion, until much to her surprise, Lizette received a Facebook message from Megan asking for help with the Calculus homework. Aha! Lizette decided to give Megan her phone number and let her join her study group of friends from the previous semester. As the semester progressed, Megan and Lizette developed a mutual friendship centered around studying for Calculus, having lunch in between classes and attending college related events.

Their friendship organically grew into romantic feelings they kept from each other. Until a trip to the Disney theme parks during spring break of 2008 changed something for both of them. They had gotten a pair of Park Hopper tickets and decided to make a day out of visiting all the parks. The entire day, the attraction and connection had grown but neither of them made the first move. At the very end of the night, on an empty, dark bus ride home, Lizette made the bold move of kissing Megan. A moment that forever changed both of their lives. From that day forward they built a connection that has lasted 9 years.

What about the proposal?

Megan secretly planned her proposal for an entire year in advance of the actual day. Lizette’s family is very religious and has never accepted her lifestyle, so for the first four years of being together, the relationship was entirely in secret. Meaning we would often meet at places that were special to us and where we knew Lizette’s family would never find us. One of those places was Disney’s Polynesian Resort in Orlando, FL. There were times Lizette would message Megan saying “Come find me,” and it was usually after a stressful day of dealing with her family. The meeting place was always the Polynesian resort, on the beach, in a hammock or beach chair where we would sit and talk things through. So, after a long year of planning, here is how the day unfolded: Megan sent Lizette a dozen red roses the morning of November 23, 2016 with a note that simply stated “Come find me…”. It had been a while since we had met there, because after Lizette came out to her family, they had chosen to not accept her lifestyle, and Lizette had to completely change her life afterwards. There was no longer a need to hide or date in secret as Lizette had chosen love over family. Either way, Lizette knew it meant she would be going to the Polynesian resort after work that day. November 23rd was not a significant day in our relationship, it was not an anniversary of a date or event, so Lizette thought Megan was planning a random romantic evening. When it was time for Lizette to leave work she messaged Megan saying she was nervous but on her way. Much to her surprise when she got to the car there was a white dress and shoes for her to change into. At this point, Lizette had a feeling it was more than just a romantic evening. When Lizette got to the Polynesian resort, she walked through the hotel and towards the beach. As soon as she turned the corner, Megan was standing in the sand, surrounded by rose petals and tea lights, and a mutual friend was standing nearby with a camera. Lizette instantly started crying and as she approached Megan grabbed her hand and got down on one knee and asked “Will you be my Tinker Bell?” (Lizette’s favorite Disney character). She had a white lantern, with the ring inside, and a small Tinker Bell figurine on the edge. Lizette said yes immediately and hugged Megan. Much to her surprise she heard a bunch of voices yelling and celebrating and when she turned around, Megan’s entire family, close friends, and a few of Lizette’s family members had all been hiding and watching the entire time. They had all known for the entire year and never let it slip! It was one of the most magical days of Lizette’s life!

When did you know that you were meant to be with each other?

It was early in the relationship, after our first kiss. We realized that spending time together didn’t change the way we felt about each other. There was this mutual respect and honesty that happened so naturally. We always wanted the best for each other and would push each other to achieve goals and dreams. Our conversations, even to this day, are something we both cherish and find attractive…we could sit and talk for hours without losing interest and be completely overwhelmed by topics that we lose track of time. The mental connection is something neither of us could deny, explain, or live without.
